Quick answer

Before commissioning quantitative surveys, define the decision it will inform, the audience, the cities, the sample, the method, the timeline and the budget. Then agree quality-control and reporting standards with your agency.

Reader intent

Who this guide is for

Three readers arrive here with different problems. Each should be able to act on this page without reading all of it.

  • Project managers running the study

A working sequence for a quantitative surveys project, from brief through field to debrief.

  • In-house teams doing it themselves

The quality controls an agency would apply, written so that you can apply them yourself.

  • Reviewers signing off a vendor plan

Read it as an audit list against the proposal currently on your desk.

01

The 12-step checklist

  • Write down the business decision
  • List the information gaps
  • Define the target audience precisely
  • Choose cities and the urban/rural split
  • Set the sample size and key segments
  • Pick the method (capi, papi, stratified sampling, weighting)
  • Agree languages and translation
  • Draft and pilot the questionnaire or guide
  • Agree quality-control checks
  • Set the timeline and milestones
  • Define deliverables and format
  • Plan the debrief and next actions

02

Why the order matters

Each step constrains the next. Changing the audience late, for example, can reset sampling, cost and timeline.

How Market Research India can help

Market Research India designs and runs quantitative surveys projects across 50 Indian cities and 30 industries. A senior research director leads every study, and our own supervised teams handle the fieldwork. You get clear recommendations, not just data tables.

Share your objective and we will send a scoped, fixed-fee proposal within 24 hours, with a recommended method, sample and timeline.

What goes wrong

Common mistakes in quantitative surveys

Most disappointing quantitative surveys studies fail for reasons that were visible in the design, not in the fieldwork. These are the ones we see most often, and what to do instead.

  • 01

Choosing the sample size from the budget

Start from the precision the decision needs. A ±4% margin of error at 95% confidence takes roughly 600 interviews, and halving that error quadruples the cost — better known before you quote.

  • 02

A sampling frame that does not represent the universe

Mall intercepts standing in for a city, or a customer database standing in for a category, produce a confident number about the wrong population.

  • 03

A questionnaire that outlasts the respondent

Past 25 minutes, straight-lining and drop-out rise sharply. Cut the grid matrices before you cut the sample.

  • 04

Weighting applied to rescue a broken field

Weights correct small imbalances. They cannot create respondents who were never interviewed, and heavy weights inflate the real margin of error.

  • 05

    Fieldwork without an audit trail

GPS tags, timestamps, audio snippets and back-checks are what let you defend a finding when a regional team disputes it. Specify them in the contract.

  • 06

    Significance claimed on thin bases

A gap between two sub-groups of forty respondents is rarely real. Agree the minimum reportable base before field and grey out everything below it in the tables.

Run through this before sign-off

Your checklist before you brief anyone

A working sequence for a quantitative surveys project. Most of it costs nothing, and it saves the two weeks a re-field would take.

  1. 1

Define the universe and the sampling frame in one paragraph before anything else is written.

  2. 2

Compute the sample from the margin of error the decision needs, not from the budget available.

  3. 3

Set quotas against a defensible external benchmark and monitor them daily in field.

  4. 4

Pilot 30 interviews, check the routing in the data file, then release full field.

  5. 5

Back-check 20% of interviews, GPS-tag completions, and fix the weighting scheme before analysis.

  6. 6

Keep the raw data, the syntax and the tables together, so the analysis can be re-run.

  7. 7

Agree in writing who acts on each finding, and by when, before the debrief ends.
