01
What this method settles
Commission this when one of the questions below is holding up a decision. If your question is not on the list, say so in the brief — we would rather recommend a different method than sell you this one.
Does the experience we designed actually happen at the counter?
Which outlets and regions are consistently off standard, and on what?
Are staff making the disclosures and offers that policy requires?
How does our service compare, visit for visit, with the competitor next door?
Did last quarter's training change anything measurable?
02
How we run it
5 stages, with one research director accountable across all of them. The person who scopes the study is the person who presents the findings.
- 1
Turn the standard into a scoreable scenario
Your service standard becomes a sequence of observable behaviours with unambiguous pass criteria, so two auditors score the same visit the same way.
- 2
Cast auditors to the outlet
Auditors are profiled to match the outlet's genuine customer on age, language and apparent income, then briefed on the scenario and its exit conditions.
- 3
Run the visit
The auditor completes the journey as a real customer, capturing geotagged photographs and, where legally permitted, audio.
- 4
Submit and verify
Reports are filed within four hours and locked. A tenth of visits are blind re-audited and auditors who drift are pulled from the batch.
- 5
Score, rank and close the loop
Outlets are ranked against the standard and against each other, with the specific failed behaviours named so coaching can be targeted.

04
What you receive
3 named deliverables, each written to be used rather than filed. Everything ships with the underlying data, so your team can keep working after the debrief.
Scorecards
Per-outlet scorecards broken down by behaviour, so a low score points at a coachable action rather than a vague deficit.
Outlet rankings
League tables by region, format and cluster, with movement since the previous wave marked.
Photo and audio evidence
Geotagged photographs and audio against each scored item, which is what makes a disputed score resolvable.
05
What keeps the data honest
Fieldwork in India fails quietly when nobody checks it. These controls are run on every mystery shopping study, by a quality team that reports separately from the field team.
Geotagged photographic evidence
Every visit carries timestamped, location-tagged photographs, so any score can be re-checked against what the auditor actually saw.
Auditor profile matched to the outlet
Auditors match the outlet's real customer on age, language and apparent income, so staff behave as they would on any other day.
Same-day, locked submission
Reports are filed within four hours of the visit, before recall degrades, and the record is locked against later editing.
Ten per cent blind re-audit
A second auditor repeats a tenth of visits without seeing the first score. Gaps beyond tolerance trigger a review of that auditor's whole batch.
Scenario legality reviewed per sector
Recording rules, entrapment limits and sector regulations are reviewed before each programme, particularly in banking, insurance and healthcare settings.
Method choice
Mystery Shopping, or one of these instead?
Most briefs can be answered more than one way, and the wrong instrument is the most expensive mistake in research. Here is how mystery shopping compares with the two methods buyers most often weigh against it.
| Mystery Shopping | Retail Audit & Distribution | Customer Satisfaction & NPS | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best used for | Seeing what your customer actually experiences | Measuring what is actually on the shelf | Finding the specific thing that loses customers |
| Typical scale | 100–2,000 visits | 200–3,000 outlets | 400–2,000 per cycle |
| Fieldwork window | 2–4 weeks per wave | 2–4 weeks per wave | Continuous or 2–3 weeks |
| Evidence produced | Observed behaviour, with proof attached | Counted facts from a fixed outlet panel | A score tied to the drivers behind it |
| Projects to a population | |||
| Relative cost | Low per visit, scales with coverage | Scales with outlet count | Low per response, priced as a programme |

Frequently asked questions
How long does a mystery shopping project take?
Two to four weeks per wave, usually run quarterly. Scenario design and auditor briefing take a week; visits start in week two. Analysis and reporting add a further one to two weeks, so most studies close inside six to ten weeks from brief to debrief.
What sample size do you recommend?
100 to 2,000 visits per wave, with two to four visits per outlet for a stable score. The right number is set by the smallest subgroup you need to report separately, not by a round figure, and we will say when a smaller sample would answer the question just as well.
What drives the cost of mystery shopping in India?
Incidence and audience difficulty first, then scale, the number of cities and languages, and the depth of reporting. Relative to other methods on this site, the cost profile is: low per visit, scales with coverage. Send a brief and you get a fixed-fee proposal within 24 hours.
When is mystery shopping the wrong choice?
It measures compliance, not preference. For why a customer chose a competitor, you still need to ask the customer.
How do you control quality in the field?
Every visit carries timestamped, location-tagged photographs, so any score can be re-checked against what the auditor actually saw. Beyond that, scenario legality reviewed per sector: recording rules, entrapment limits and sector regulations are reviewed before each programme, particularly in banking, insurance and healthcare settings.
Can international teams commission this from outside India?
Yes. We report in English, run calls across US, European and Asian time zones, and handle local-language fieldwork and translation end to end.
